Authorized Economic Operator (AEO) and Trusted Trader Programs are voluntary, internationally recognized certifications granted to businesses that meet strict customs compliance, supply chain security, and financial solvency standards. These programs aim to enhance trade facilitation while strengthening customs control and supply chain security.
Authorized Economic Operator (AEO) & Trusted Trader Programs

AEO in the EU and UK
In the European Union, AEO status is issued under the Union Customs Code (UCC) by national customs authorities. There are two types of authorisations:
- AEO-C (Customs Simplifications): For companies with a strong record in customs compliance, record-keeping, and solvency.
- AEO-S (Security and Safety): For businesses with secure logistics processes and risk-managed supply chains.
UK AEO status mirrors the EU model but is issued by HMRC. Post-Brexit, UK AEO does not automatically confer benefits in the EU, although discussions around mutual recognition continue.
Benefits of AEO/Trusted Trader Status
- Fewer customs checks and priority treatment saving you time and money
- Lower costs through reduction or waivers of deferment and comprehensive guarantees
- Quicker access to customs authorisations (simplified and specialised procedures)
- Priority treatment during disruptions or inspections
Eligibility and Requirements
To obtain AEO status, companies must demonstrate:
- Legally established in an EU member state or the UK
- Be actively involved in customs operations and international trade
- Have an Economic Operator Registration and Identification (EORI) number
- Have a good history of compliance with customs and tax rules and regulations
The process involves a rigorous audit by customs authorities and may take several months.
Business Implications
AEO is becoming a strategic necessity, particularly for high-volume importers/exporters, companies involved in EU–UK trade, and those operating under customs special procedures. Many major multinationals require AEO status from their logistics providers or suppliers.
