Recognised by the Industry's Highest Authority

The BIFA Freight Service Awards celebrate outstanding contributions, high standards, and innovation across UK freight forwarding and logistics. ALS was named winner in the category Customs Compliance Services, in its very first year, for a work that connects technology, staff development, and direct collaboration with UK and EU authorities. The judges assessed entries on innovative ideas, service enhancements, and tangible benefits for customers and the industry. ALS's submission covered all three and more.

We aim for 100% compliance no matter who we're working for. It's key to the philosophy of our business.

Compliance Starts With a Strategy

ALS's award-winning approach is built on three interconnected initiatives — each reinforcing the others, and all centred on the same foundation: genuine customs compliance.

Purpose-Built In-House for Compliance

Technology

Mota, ALS's in-house customs management system, has been extended this year with Mota Compliance: a capability that checks HS codes and descriptions for integrity, applies country-specific prohibitions and restrictions, verifies duty preferences, and screens all parties against Denied Party Screening databases.

AI Intelligent Document Processing extracts data from commercial documents, reducing errors at source. Critically, ALS has worked with its AI provider to build Human in the Loop review functions specifically for customs compliance, checking weights, origins, values, and supplier statements before any declaration is submitted.

People Who Know What Compliance Actually Means

Staff

ALS operates in one of the most highly regulated sectors in global trade. The company has developed an in-house eLearning platform that supports onboarding, yearly compliance refreshers, and targeted training based on post-clearance checks and audit findings.

Modules cover what compliance means in practice, why it matters, and how to identify and manage risk day-to-day. External programmes, including BIFA training for import and export declarations, are compulsory for all UK declarants.

Using Compliance to Remove Border Friction

Collaboration

This is ALS's most significant initiative. Working with the Open Logistics Foundation, a non-profit where major logistics and customs players collaborate on open-source software, ALS co-leads the Open Customs working group.

The team developed GPID (Goods Passport ID): a secured key dataset that concentrates on the data fields most critical to compliance, sourced directly from the seller and designed to be tamper-proof. This was selected by the EU's European Blockchain Services Infrastructure as a test case for its regulatory sandbox.

ALS collaborates with leading authorities and industry partners to shape the future of logistics.

This year, we delivered a pioneering pilot with HMRC and iC4DTI demonstrating how the Electronic Trade Documents Act enables Trusted Key Data to be shared with authorities before arrival. This allows compliance and risk checks to be completed in advance, enabling faster “green lane” clearance, reducing delays, and offering a model that could be replicated across Europe and beyond.

ALS was the only logistics and customs provider selected to take part in this pilot, underlining our unique role in shaping this initiative.

Building on our collaboration with the Open Logistics Foundation (OLF), where we co-lead the Open Customs working group, we developed a secure dataset forming the basis of GPID (Goods Passport ID), selected by the EU for its blockchain sandbox.

This work led directly to our invitation to the HMRC pilot, and we are now working towards a live, end-to-end trial—reinforcing ALS’s commitment to collaboration, innovation, and the future of global trade.

Not Every Provider Operates to the Same Standard

As customs regulations have become more complex post-Brexit, some providers are using AI to auto-fill declarations based on historical data without human verification—an approach that is non-compliant and currently difficult to detect, though HMRC auditing is catching up and penalties may be significant.

ALS takes a clear stance: AI is never used to infer classifications or codes. Every declaration is fully reviewed by a trained declarant before submission, with no shortcuts regardless of volume or pressure.
